Caye Caulker's Original Animal Sanctuary

Cat Care

Do you enjoy taking care of your pets? Have you always felt a special bond with animals? Becoming an animal caretaker volunteer at P.A.W. is one way you can use your love and interest in animals and if you decide to make this your career you can put this experience on your resume.

What’s involved?

Daily tasks include feeding the cats, cleaning their food and water bowls, scooping and replacing litter, brushing the cats, and helping Madi, P.A.W.’s founder and director, supervise the cats during their “free time” outside of the cattery. The four dogs that live onsite also need some care, including walks, baths, and administering medication if needed. In addition, you’re asked to spend time with the cats as you get started with your project in order to help them feel a bit more comfortable around you, and vice versa.

You will spend four hours in the morning, and two hours in the evening working with this project, with one day free each week. The island of Caye Caulker, Belize is quite small, so you can spend your free time in the early afternoons and evenings on the beach, exploring the town, and checking out local restaurants, vendors, and events.

If there are multiple volunteers onsite, then you’re welcome to rotate tasks, with one person cleaning the catteries and one person bringing the cats in and out for exercise every other day.

All volunteers stay onsite at P.A.W. Your accommodation will be in a cabana just at the shoreline. If you want to upgrade your accommodation to one of our suites (at an additional cost) then we can give you more details when you apply.

There are no background requirements for this program, though you must be comfortable working with and handling cats throughout the day. All volunteers must be 18 or older, willing to stay at least two weeks, and be in good health.
