WILD THING Purrfect Gifts
Founder of P.A.W., Madi Collins, has supported the sanctuary through her snorkel renting business, hosting campers on her property at PAWS for Peace Campground, and by selling her unique art line called Scrap Creations in her island store Wild Thing.
Madi, is a self-taught artist, and is proud to share her unique line of art collections through the internet.
Scrap Creations is inspired by her love for nature and the animals in the sanctuary. Her unique, whimsical art is created from environmentally friendly and safe materials found in the sanctuary’s very own back yard.
She uses leftover scrap wood, and various types of seeds from trees native to her island such as Coconut seeds, Hammons seed (often referred to as “the local Almond tree”), and Coco Plum seed, which is a tree bearing very small white meaty fruits that are native to Caye Caulker.
Her creations primarily resemble the residents of the sanctuary. Cats have a tough time surviving on this island, mainly because local islanders will accept a dog before they will accept a cat.
LOBSTER TRAPS
Most cats on the island are homeless and have no guardians. They hunt for food in people’s garbage. Some will learn to fish, and others eat rodents and other scraps. Some sleep in large grassy areas where they can hide. At the end of the lobster season an extraordinary thing happens on the island - the cats begin to use these traps as their homes. The cats enjoy them because they are enclosed with an opening at the mouth which they use as their door. When a cat is inside, it is difficult for others to enter. This gives them the safety they need to protect them from other cats, dogs and people. Mother cats also use the traps to give birth to their young. These traps are a wonderful compliment to a homeless cat.
